Ling Yun, a native of Taiwan, was born in 1941, as Lin Long-song. He joined Yu Feng Company’s actor training programme in 1957 and starred in a number of Taiwanese-dialect movies under the alias of Long Song. Following two years of military service, he joined Shaw Brothers in 1964 on the recommendation of director Pan Lei. This was when he changed his name to Ling Yun.
Ling joined Shaw Brothers and made his first movie in Hong Kong was director Chin Chien’s Pink Tears, which Ling co-starred with Fung Bo-bo and Julie Yeh-Feng. His cool appearance in the movie propelled him into stardom. Shaw Brothers’ movies in which Ling appeared in included, Sweet and Wild, Rose, Be My Love, The Purple Shell, King Drummer, Rainbow, Gun Brothers, Dark Rendezvous, Love Without End.
After his contract with Shaw Brothers expired in 1977, Ling began appearing in productions of other studios, mostly as an action star. In 1981, he also directed the movie The Last Duel (1981).
