| Beloved Malaysian-born Chinese film and TV actress famously known for her HK action films and performing her own stunts a la Jackie Chan.
At the age of 15, she moved with her parents to the United Kingdom, where she was enrolled in a boarding school. Yeoh later studied at the UK's Royal Academy of Dance in London, majoring in ballet.
In 1983, at the age of 20, she won the Miss Malaysia beauty pageant, and was discovered when she appeared in 1984 with Jackie Chan in a memorable Guy Laroche watch commercial.
She was eventually signed to the fledgling film production company D&B films in 1987, and subsequently married the co-founder of that company - Dickson Poon. Yeoh retired from acting for a few years but returned to acting with Police Story 3: Super Cop (1992) after divorcing Poon.
Went on to star in the Bond Film "Tomorrow Never Does" in 1997.
She was recruited by Ang Lee to star in a leading role as Yu Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). The film was an international success, won dozens of awards (including multiple BAFTA and Academy Awards) and was a watershed film for the rediscovery of Chinese cinema to the world. Yeoh was nominated for a BAFTA Best Actress in a Leading Role award.
She attained Hollywood film superstardom with the 2022 film "Everything Everywhere All at Once." The film won 7 of its 11 Academy Award nominations...with Michelle Yeoh winning the Academy Award for "Best Actress". |
